Quality WHMIS training can save lives at any time. These however, are unprecedented and challenging times. Some workers are now frequently using cleaning and disinfecting chemicals to keep workplaces (and homes) free of potential COVID-19 exposures. Mix the wrong cleaning products for instance and a deadly gas could be created. Work with some products without proper controls and exposures may lead to deadly occupational disease years down the road. Many workers are also new to workplaces as health and community care, retail and warehousing are hiring to help meet increased demands during the COVID-19 crisis. They too require proper training.
Clearly, gathering in traditional classrooms is impossible right now. Hence, our decision to expand critical access for workers to our recently-launched virtual classroom.

Vitrual classroom, ensured learning

WHSC is delivering legally mandated Globally Harmonized (GHS) WHMIS training via live (real-time), two-hour, virtual training sessions for just $10. Participants will gain an understanding of WHMIS hazard class pictograms and of standardized information on product labels and safety data sheets (SDSs) to ensure the safe use, storage and disposal of cleaning, disinfecting and other hazardous products in the workplace.

Like all our training, this virtual offerings will be led by experienced instructors and be highly interactive, applying adult education principles to ensure learning is engaging, relevant and achieved. Such is the difference between our program and other WHMIS initiatives, which are not training at all, but merely online information. Employers must consider this when selecting a training partner and delivery model. After all, Ontario law requires that WHMIS training results in workers being able to use the information to protect their health and safety [s. 7(3), WHMIS Reg.].
