The Niagara Health System decided that the Welland General Hospital will close once the new hospital in Niagara Falls is built. This decision was made without a public consultation with the more than 94,000 residents living in Pelham, Port Colborne, Wainfleet and Welland. Both Niagara Falls/Fort Erie (population of over 113,000) and Welland/Port Colborne/Wainfleet/Pelham need to have their own full service hospital.
The Niagara Health System did not take into consideration the potential health, social and economic impacts of the closure the Welland hospital on South Niagara.
